Religous Sculpture

Three religous sculptures by Nickolaus Seffrin (Photos and commentary courtesy of Anglican Church Archive)
Crucifix, St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane
Steel Mesh
1964
Unlike many other European artists to create commissions for the Anglican church in Australia, Seffrin’s artistic training commenced in Australia at the Brisbane Technical College in the early 1960s. This particular work was not specifically designed for St John’s, but was regarded by the then dean, W. P. Baddeley, to be an appropriate one.
In this work, honesty with the medium encourages the degree to which the human form is stylised and abstracted. Its economy of expression increases its powerful impact.

Resurrection, Christ Church St Lucia Bronze 1971
Seffrin sought to move beyond the historic moment and specific situation of the Gospel’s presentation of the events of Christ’s life, and to evoke a more universal dimension. The figure is nude, and was the subject of a degree of adverse comment in the parish on its installation.

Sculpting steel (sometimes with applied bronze) where there is no cast and so "duplicates" are not possible, is an extremely labour-intensive process – the advantage to the commissioner or collector is that each piece is unique and cannot be replicated...
